Add CBS News to Google According to sources close to the decision who spoke to CBS News, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to resign and retire immediately.
One of the sources said that Hegseth wanted to bring someone to the position who would implement President Trump’s and Hegseth’s vision for the military.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced that George would be « retiring as the 41st Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, effective immediately. » Parnell stated, « The Department of War is grateful for General George’s years of service to our nation. We wish him success in his retirement. »
A senior Defense Department official told CBS News, « We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a change in leadership within the military. »
According to three sources familiar with the matter, two other Army officers, General David Hodne, who headed the Army Transformation and Training Command, and Major General William Green, who headed the Army Chaplaincy Corps, were also removed from their posts. The Washington Post first reported on the removal of Hodne and Green.
Following his long service, George served as a senior military advisor to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during the Biden administration from 2021-2022. Beginning his career as an infantry officer and a West Point graduate, George first served in the First Gulf War and more recently in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff typically serves a four-year term. George was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, meaning he would normally serve until 2027.
